The mother of three children was cited Thursday on suspicion of child abuse after Colorado Springs Police said they found an active butane hash oil extractor in the family's apartment, along with about 16 flowering marijuana plants.

Detectives also planned to arrest the woman's husband on suspicion of manufacturing marijuana in connection with the marijuana plants, though a warrant was still being prepared Friday afternoon, said Lt. Mark Comte, head of the Colorado Springs Police Department's Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence unit.

Coloradans can have six marijuana plants at a time, three of which can be flowering, he said.

Police said officers went to the apartment on a call to check the residents' welfare. The extractor, marijuana and oil were allegedly accessible to the children, according to police.

El Paso County Department of Human Services later took custody of the children, all of whom are under the age of 7.
