Colorado Springs police arrested a 23-year-old man early Friday morning after he allegedly tried to steal beer from a 7-Eleven, hit the clerk with metal shelving and led a police dog on a wild chase.

Zane Gutierrez was taken into custody after police dog Rico and his handler tracked the man down not far from the convenience story on North Circle Drive where the attempted robbery and assault allegedly took place.

According to the clerk, Gutierrez came into the store shortly after midnight and tried to steal beer. The clerk confronted the man who grabbed a piece of shelving and hit the clerk several times on the head before he fought back, police said.

Gutierrez ran from the store, police said, before Rico and his handler began the chase. According to the CSPD blotter report, they caught the man before he shoved the officer into a police cruiser and ran off again. Rico eventually cornered Gutierrez iin a yard where he was taken into custody.

The clerk sustained minor injuries and Gutierrez was taken to Memorial hospital where he was treated for injuries from his contact with Rico.

Gutierrez was taken to the El Paso County jail on suspicion of assault and assault on a police officer.
