A woman spotted shoplifting from a Wal-Mart store Saturday punched, scratched and then sprayed a loss prevention officer in the face with pepper spray before fleeing with a friend in a Toyota Echo, police say.

Colorado Springs police responded to a call to the Wal-Mart at 1575 Space Center Dr. at 2:40 p.m.

The loss prevention officer told police a woman placed several items in a plastic tub and concealed the tub in a large purse. The suspect and another woman were in the tire and lube area when he confronted them, police said.

The woman with the looted merchandise attacked the loss prevention officer, scratching him and punching him, police said. Then the women began walking toward the front doors to leave.

When he asked them to stop a second time, the shoplifter grabbed pepper spray from her purse and sprayed the loss prevention worker in the face.

Officers were unable to find the women.

The loss prevention officer suffered minor injuries.
