A Yorkshire terrier being walked by its owner in south Colorado Springs was killed by a pit bull Sunday.
The pit bull appears to have been loose at about 2:35 p.m. when it attacked the dog on Florence Avenue near Cheyenne Road and Lake Avenue, said Stacey Candella, spokeswoman for the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
The pit bull has been turned over to the Humane Society, where it will be euthanized, Candella said. The owner of the pit bull, who was not present when the attack took place, was cited for unlawful ownership of a dangerous animal.
This is the second recent pit bull incident in Colorado Springs.
On July 12, a 6-year-old girl was bitten in the face by a pit bull that ran out of its house. Meagan Garrow required hours of surgery and hundreds of stitches.

The pit bull that attacked her was euthanized.
