I know I'm not the only one bummed about Brewer's Republic closing in December in downtown Colorado Springs. Regulars are now scouting out their new downtown stop for quality suds and eats.

Truly, Brewer's Republic was one-of-a-kind, but these nearby establishments should satisfy: Fieldhouse Brewing Co., with a low-key atmosphere like Brewer's and food trucks; Odyssey Gastropub, which is on the pricier side but might have the best beer and food choices on Tejon Street; and Iron Bird Brewing Co., with a short but tasty brew and pizza lineup. - Seth Boster

ALSO: I've discovered a new favorite writer: Dani Shapiro. I recently finished two of her books: "Hourglass: Time, Memory, Marriage," a poignant musing on her longest relationship, and "Still Writing," a compact book full of short observations and advice for writers.

I found myself reading both books in small chunks so I could savor her lyrical and thought-provoking prose. She also recently held a series of live workshops on Facebook called "Office Hours with Dani Shapiro" that delve into the craft of writing and the creative process. They're still available for free on the social media site. - Jennifer Mulson
