The Pikes Peak Workforce Center is taking applications through March 1 for $73,000 in grants for businesses to train existing employees to help retain them or avoid layoffs.
The training will focus on information technology, health care, cybersecurity and manufacturing.
The center has received funding through the federal Workforce Investment Opportunity Act and plans to make grants by March 15 for training that must be completed by June 30 in classrooms or on the job, said Jennifer Pierceall-Herman, industry relations manager for the agency. Grants have been used in previous years for systems technicians, quality control, motors and controls, advanced hydraulic, AC/DC electricity, communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, strategic planning, problem solving and many other areas.
Eligible workers must have been with the employer that is applying for the grant for six months or longer. If the grant is to train a group of employees, at least 51 percent of the workers must meet the six-month requirement. Employers applying for grant must agree to pay a share of training costs for their workers. That share ranges between 10 percent and 50 percent depending on the number of employees.
