Pikes Peak Rankings: 5A boys, girls hoops make a switch at No. 1

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Team records as of Jan. 8

Class 5A

  1. Doherty (9-2)
  2. Rampart (7-3)
  3. Liberty (8-3)

Dropped out: N/A

Breakdown: After topping last week’s 5A rankings with an impressive start to the season, Liberty boys’ hit its first roadblock of the year, falling to 5A Colorado Springs Metro league foe Doherty. The Spartans claimed a 69-59 win over the Lancers to take the No. 1 spot in this week’s 5A rankings. Doherty has won six straight averaging more than 65 points per game.

After their loss to Doherty in the first game of 2018, Liberty bounced back for a nine-point win over Fountain-Fort Carson.

Rampart had a productive weekend going 2-1 at the Rampart Holiday Classic, beating 3A’s CSCS, 5A’s Fruita Monument, and challenging 4A No. 5 Pueblo West in a thrilling back-and-forth matchup. The Rams will have a tough week opening 5A CSML play vs. Fountain-Fort Carson (2-8, 1-1), Liberty (8-3, 1-1) and Pine Creek (4-3, 1-0).

Class 4A

  1. Lewis-Palmer (8-0)
  2. Falcon (5-3)
  3. Palmer Ridge (8-3)

Dropped out: N/A

Breakdown: Falcon moved up in the Pikes Peak rankings thanks to a four-point win over former No. 2 Palmer Ridge. The Falcons’ are ranked No. 13 in Class 4A with the strongest strength of schedule (8.1) of any Pikes Peak region team ranked in the top 20. Falcon will face its greatest test so far as the team faces Lewis-Palmer on Wednesday.

The Rangers remain atop the Pikes Peak rankings and Class 4A as they continue their unbeaten streak into 2018. Lewis-Palmer locked in a 16-point win over Sand Creek and a 13-point margin over Vista Ridge in its first 5A/4A Pikes Peak conference matchups this season.

Palmer Ridge dropped from No. 8 to 11 in 4A rankings, and down one spot in the Pikes Peak rankings. The Bears will face No. 20 Air Academy in their next challenge on Wednesday.

Class 3A and below

  1. The Vanguard School (5-1)
  2. Calhan (4-2)
  3. Evangelical Christian (4-3)

Dropped out: Colorado Springs Christian (4-4)

Breakdown: The Calhan Bulldogs emerged on the Pike Peak rankings after a narrow victory over Genoa-Hugo/Karval in the new year. Calhan has won four of its last five games and put up 94 points in the second game of the season. The Bulldogs are second in the state in rebounds (48.5 per game), ranked sixth in steals (18.8 pg) and No. 5 in assists (17.7 pg).

The Vanguard School remains atop the Pikes Peak rankings even though the Coursers have not gotten back on the court in the new year. The Vanguard School will face 0-7 Florence on Tuesday in its first game back.

An overtime win over Byers kept Evangelical Christian in the Pikes Peak rankings and a top 15 rank in class 2A. The Eagles will open 2A District 8 play this week against Peyton and Ellicott.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Team records as of Jan. 8

Class 5A

  1. Doherty (9-3)
  2. Liberty (5-2)
  3. Pine Creek (4-4)

Dropped out: Rampart (3-6)

Breakdown: The Spartans dethroned Liberty with a three-point win over the Lancers last Thursday, then claimed a decisive 35-point win over Coronado. Doherty has won five straight and will face 5A CSML rivals Pine Creek and Palmer this week.

Liberty’s loss to Doherty didn’t tarnish the Landers’ fast start as they quickly rebounded to earn an eight-point win over Fountain-Fort Carson on Saturday. Liberty is 2-1 in 2018 and will face Palmer (3-8) and Rampart (3-6) next week.

Pine Creek snuck into the Pikes Peak rankings narrowly beating out Vista Ridge (6-4) thanks to its strength of schedule. Despite sitting at .500, the Eagles have the toughest schedule of any 5A Pikes Peak region team. Pine Creek will face another tough opponent in Doherty this week.

Class 4A

  1. Air Academy (9-1)
  2. Widefield (7-2)
  3. Mesa Ridge (5-3)

Dropped out: Discovery Canyon (6-3), The Classical Academy (7-2)

Breakdown: Widefield and Mesa Ridge staked their claim in 4A Pikes Peak rankings as both teams moved into the top 15 in the state. Both teams boast a tough schedule and won their first games of 2018.

The Gladiators claimed a 23-point win over Pueblo East, and a narrow one-point edge over Sierra. Mesa Ridge bested TCA, which dropped out of this week’s rankings, by 11 points.

Widefield and Mesa Ridge face off on Tuesday in a 4A CSML rivalry game.

Air Academy ramins No. 1 in the Pikes Peak rankings and sit in No. 3 in state 4A. The Kadets are riding a six-game winning streak and face 4A/5A Pikes Peak foe Palmer Ridge on Wednesday.

Class 3A and below

  1. St. Mary’s (8-0)
  2. Colorado Springs School (7-0)
  3. Colorado Springs Christian (6-2)

Dropped out: The Vanguard School (4-1)

Breakdown: A pair of unbeaten teams highlight 3A and under Pikes Peak rankings, with St. Mary’s claiming the top spot in Class 3A at 8-0 with Colorado Springs School at No. 6 in 2A.

Despite collecting its first two losses of the season last weekend at the Rampart Holiday Classic, Colorado Springs Christian sits at No. 3 in 3A with the toughest schedule among the top 25 3A squads.

St. Mary’s is fresh off a 37-point win over Trinidad and will face Pueblo East on Wednesday. Colorado Springs School has not been in action since Dec. 12, and will kick off its 2018 slate against Calhan on Friday.
