Fifth and final performance packs arena again

Not even a persistent, early-evening rain shower could keep droves of fans away from Norris-Penrose Event Center for Saturday night's fifth and final performance of Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Days. According to rodeo officials, all 5,500 seats in the arena had been sold by 3 p.m., and fans slopped through muddy fields and plenty of puddles to reach their final destination.

Despite across-the-board ticket price increases, the four days and five performances of the rodeo drew more than 25,000 spectators, an increase over the 2012 event.

Champion is the champion

Richmond Champion of The Woodlands, Texas, who scored 87 points on Harry Vold's Little Linda during Friday's bareback riding competition, eventually took top honors, netting a $5,935 paycheck. Meanwhile, tie-down roper Jake Pratt of Ellensburg, Wash., took top honors by earning the rodeo's biggest payday, bagging $7,588 after winning the first round, placing second in the second and winning the two-round average with a total time of 16.2 seconds. Other overall champs at Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Days were: steer wrestler Sterling Lambert of Fallon, Nev., 8.5 seconds on two head, $5,376; team ropers Kaleb Driggers of Albany, Ga., and Travis Graves of Jay, Okla., 9.8 seconds on two head, $6,036; saddle bronc rider Taos Muncy of Corona, N.M., 86 points on Harry Vold's Little Miss, $4,838; barrel racer Michelle McLeod of Whitesboro, Texas, 34.32 seconds on two runs, $4,871; and bull rider Cody Teel of Kountze, Texas, 87 points on 4L and Diamond S Rodeo's Rustler's Paradise, $5,351.
