Gazette Premium Content Pikes Peak Ascent runners cross the finish line

How long does it take to run up America's mountain?

Early results started trickling in soon after 9 a.m. Saturday for the Pikes Peak Ascent. The first wave of runners set off from Manitou at 7 a.m., with the second wave starting out half an hour later.

The top three overall male finishers:
1 - Eric M Blake of West Hartford, Conn. at 2:13:45
2 - Greg Ruckman of Breckenridge at 2:22:57
3 - Simon Gutierrez of Colorado Springs at 2:27:274 - David McKayof Iowa City, Iowa, at 2:30:03
5 - Brian Folts of Lakewood at 2:32:57 (He is also registered to run in Sunday's Marathon.)

It was a closer finish in 2012, with the top three men finishing within minutes of each other.

Kim Dobson of Grand Junction was the first woman to reach the top of the peak, at 2:41:43.

Dobson is a repeat for first place. She finished first in 2012 at 2:24:58, which set a new state record.

Other top women in the Ascent:
2 - Ashlee Nelson of Colorado Springs at 2:48:58
3 - Hayley Benson of Littleton at 2:55:04
4 - Connilee Walter of Colorado Springs at 2:58:45 (She is also registered to run the Marathon on Sunday.)
5 - Monica Bishop of Lakewood at 3:05:41

An estimated 1,800 runners set their sights on the summit of Pikes Peak on Saturday, with another 800 entered to ascend, then descend American's Mountain on Sunday.

Times are further broken down into categories, and numbser will be posted on gazette.com later Saturday as soon as they are released and compiled.
