PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix plans to expand and upgrade Terminal 3 of Sky Harbor International Airport and eventually close Terminal 2 under a $500 million modernization project.
The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/1dpBezf) reports that officials say the 330,000-square-foot Terminal 2 is outdated and expensive to operate. It opened in 1962.
Terminal 3 opened in 1979 and it has 880,000 square feet. The expansion of Terminal 3 replaces a previous plan to build a new terminal.
Most flights to and from Sky Harbor operate out of the newer and larger Terminal 4.
Terminal 1 was closed in 1991. Other terminals weren't renumbered.
