A man who was run over by a Ford SUV south of downtown Colorado Springs died Wednesday, marking the city's first traffic fatality of the year, police announced.

The pedestrian, whose name has not been released, was pinned beneath the vehicle shortly before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at South Nevada Avenue and East Las Vegas Street, police said. The man was walking east across the avenue when the SUV struck him as it turned southbound onto South Nevada Avenue from East Las Vegas Street, police said.

An officer called in the incident, and when firefighters arrived the man had to be extricated from beneath the vehicle. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

No charges have been filed in the incident, which is being investigated by the Police Department's Major Accident Unit.

Neither speeding nor drugs and alcohol are being considered factors. Police couldn't say whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 444-7000. To remain anonymous, call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 634-7867.
