Peak Vista Community Health Centers plans to expand its presence in Fountain - a response, officials say, to an increase demand for low-cost health care south of Colorado Springs.
The nonprofit organization plans to break ground Aug. 29 on the 14,000-square foot facility at Lyckman Drive and North Santa Fe Avenue, according to a statement. Construction on the $5.2 million facility should last through April.
Undeveloped land for the new building was donated this summer by Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8, which opened its own building this summer on the adjacent plot of land - the Welte Education Center.
Peak Vista offers medical and dental care at the Lorraine Center, 301 E. Iowa Ave.
Once the new facility opens, the organization plans to move all of its staff from the Lorraine Center to the new facility. The move will result in a facility featuring far more services, officials said.
The new facility will include medical, dental and behavioral health care programs. In addition, AspenPointe, the Pikes Peak Workforce Center and El Paso County Department of Human Services will also have space in the building.
"Certainly the Fountain Valley is growing and the fact that we're able to expand from approximately 3,300 square feet to a 14,000 square foot facility will really allow us to increase access to patients," said Kandi Buckland, Peak Vista's vice president of operations.
There are about 2,000 people across the Pikes Peak region waiting to receive services from Peak Vista, Buckland said.
The groundbreaking marks yet another expansion for Peak Vista in recent years.
In September 2012, the organization bought a 100,000-square-foot hospital and an 89,000-square-foot medical office building from Penrose-St. Francis Health Services to turn it into a large health care center at North Academy Boulevard near Village Road.
The organization has opened a family practice clinic and a health center for the developmentally disabled at the facility (which once was Penrose Community Hospital), Buckland said. It also recently opened a pharmacy at the building.
