A house fire Friday morning in northeast Colorado Springs claimed the lives of four dogs, but a fifth dog was rescued by firefighters and survived.

No one else was in the house at 954 Kettle Rock Court when the emergency calls came in about 10 a.m. describing flames and smoke shooting from windows, said city spokeswoman Kim Melchor .

About 30 Colorado Springs and Wescott Fire Protection District firefighters responded to the fire. A few of them rushed into the house to locate victims, Melchor said, but the only one to emerge was an adult black Labrador retriever, who was treated and released to its owners.

The fire was extinguished before it spread to other structures, Melchor said and no residents or firefighters were injured.

Details about the cause of the fire and extent of the damage are expected Monday.

The home's three family members are displaced, Melchor said.
