ASPEN — State transportation officials hope to open Independence Pass in western Colorado on time this year — if weather conditions stay calm.

The Aspen Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1srTvU2 ) the 12,095-foot pass on Colorado 82 between Aspen and Leadville is expected to open at 2 p.m. May 22, the Thursday before Memorial Day. It opened on time last year as well.

The winding pass, the first road pioneered in the Roaring Fork Valley in 1881, is closed every winter because of treacherous conditions.
