Office Depot Inc. will close its store near Chapel Hills Mall on Nov. 2 just weeks before the lease on the location is scheduled to expire.

The Florida-based chain said the closure is unrelated to its pending merger with competitor OfficeMax Inc., which operates a store less than a mile north of the Office Depot store in the Woodmen Commons shopping center, 1750 E. Woodmen Road, but didn't respond to questions about why it is shuttering the location, how many employees work at the store and whether they will be moved to another location. Office Depot is conducting a closing sale at the Woodmen Road store, which opened in 1998, and is redirecting customers to a store it opened in 2009 at 3640 Austin Bluffs Parkway.

Office Depot and Office- Max announced plans in February to merge the chains, which together operate more than 2,500 stores worldwide, though the combined company would still be smaller than office products industry leader Staples Inc., which reported more than $24 billion in sales last year. Besides the store that is closing, Office Depot operates four other stores in the Springs, while OfficeMax operates three local stores, including a location in the Cheyenne Mountain Center that is less than a mile from an Office Depot location in the Broadmoor Towne Center.

Warren Dean, a partner in Woodmen Retail Center LLC, which owns Woodmen Commons, said Friday that the lease on the 30,000-square-foot store expires this year. He said the partnership is talking with several other potential tenants for the space, but no replacement has been signed. The center also is anchored by Sam's Club, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Marshall's and several other major retailers.
