Where on Earth was it the coldest as we rang in 2018?
It appears the answer is Hettinger, N.D., according to a tweet by the National Weather Service in Bismarck.
Though the forecast high temperature for Hettinger on Monday was around zero, at about 7:25 a.m., Hettinger recorded an air temperature of -45 — which does not factor in the windchill. Hettinger, a town of about 1,200, is located in southwestern North Dakota near the South Dakota border.
Hettinger, ND dropped down to -45F at 7:25 AM MST today. This appears to be one of the coldest, if not the coldest, recorded temperature on the planet today!— NWS Bismarck (@NWSBismarck) January 1, 2018
