Breakdown: Doherty saddled with a No. 12 seed. Saddled because Gateway won't be an easy matchup. The Olympians narrowly missed beating No. 14 Rangeview, losing 7-6. Only blowout loss came to No. 6 Cherokee Trail. Fountain-Fort Carson gets extremely tough test against No. 8 Pomona. Trojans have work cut out against team whose only losses are to No. 1 Fairview and No. 3 Cherrk Creek - by a combined seven points. ... Pine Creek and Falcon on state championship collision course? Eagles and Falcons are Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, in wild-card points. That would keep them on opposite ends of bracket. But we realize it's extremely early - just don't tell us the thought hasn't crossed your mind, too. How big was that win by Vista Ridge over Sand Creek? The Wolves vaulted from No. 20 to No. 17 in wild-card points - one point out of a playoff spot. ... Coronado, Discovery Canyon. Who's better? We'll find out Saturday, as the two teams grapple with each other. Look for more on that later in the week. .... Manitou Springs and Florence on state championship collision course? They're on opposite ends of bracket, but Florence would likely see No. 1 Brush in quarterfinals. CSCS has tough trip to one-loss No. 4 Paonia, a team with three shutouts and eight wins by a combined score of 308-69. That's an average win score of 39-9 (rounding up).

Breakdown: The final volleyball rankings for the season, as teams prepare for regional play this week. The 5A CSML ended in a three-way tie, hence the reason all three teams are tied for first here. All three earned hosting honors, while five of the six league teams qualified for regionals. Defending champ Doherty ended up with the highest regional seed of the bunch - No. 8 - while Rampart (No. 9) and Pine Creek (No. 12) , which swept Doherty, weren't far behind. ... Lewis-Palmer just got swept by Cheyenne Mountain in the Cheyenne Mountain tournament, yet receives No. 1 in 4A regional tournaments. Guess that league match counts for more. Air Academy hosting a regional, too, giving 4A PPAC three hosts (and a fourth entrant in Palmer Ridge). ... The seeding committee may have devalued Manitou Springs, but we won't. They finish on top here. Now can they do it at state? CSS avenged its loss to Simla, but fell to Kiowa in district play. CSCS has 10 losses. Half of them are to 5A or 4A schools who will host regionals.
