A night of ringing in the New Year with family ended tragically for a man found shot to death Wednesday morning in southeast Colorado Springs. On Thursday, the El Paso County Coroner's Office identified the man as 19-year-old Olajuwon Kumangai. Police said they found Kumangai's body about 7 a.m. after responding to reports of a drive-by shooting at the Antero Apartments northwest of Fountain and Murray boulevards.
Hours later, police arrested Matthew John Dejong, 30, on suspicion of first-degree murder.
According to court documents, the shooting happened after a night of partying.
Tuesday night, Kumangai was at the Copperhead Road nightclub on north Academy Boulevard celebrating with family members, when he met a woman witnesses referred to as "D," the affidavit said.
"D," was later identified by investigators as 23-year-old Donetta Loggins. When the club closed, she left with Kumangai and his family and went with them to the Antero Apartments.
During her stay, she was texting Dejong, saying her hosts would not let her leave.
She did leave the apartment later, however, and texted Dejong asking for a ride home.
Dejong arrived to pick her up, but he didn't take her home. Instead Loggins directed him to the apartment, where he confronted Kumangai and others in the apartment parking lot, the affidavit says. During the confrontation Dejong pulled out a .45 pistol and fired it once into the air, the affidavit says. Then, as Dejong was getting into his car to leave, he fired again, directly at Kumangai.
