A half mile of pavement is all that separates a few race-car drivers from world records at the Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack.

The popular event, known as the "Super Bowl of half-mile racing," returns to the Colorado Springs Airport this weekend.

The competition, run by Revvolution and Shift-S3ctor, has been a fan favorite since its inception in 2014. Up to 10,000 spectators are expected to watch the 2,640 feet of side-by-side trap speed competition featuring the fastest stock and modified street cars in the world. Trap speed is a vehicle's velocity captured at the end of the run - indicating maximum speed reached.

In big-ticket vehicles such as McLarens, Lamborghinis and Porsches, as well as souped-up BMWs, Mercedes and Nissans, professionals and regular folks will be pitted against each other. Drivers can race another car or speed down the course solo, all in pursuit of the title of Mile High Victor.

"We'll have some of the biggest names in the half-mile industry," said Ryan Randels, co-owner of Revvolution and Shift-S3ctor.

"Coming into 2018, the biggest change we have is to our competition structure. With a trap speed competition, each day is a new competition. This new style of competition is a nail-biter all the way through the event.

"Previously if you were the top trap speed, you didn't have to come out again. Now these guys have to come out multiple times," he said. "It keeps people engaged throughout the entire event."

Drivers will qualify from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Those who advance to semifinals compete from 1 to 3 p.m.. A finals race from 3:30 to 4 p.m. determines the victor.

"I can't wait to see Colorado's community go up against the rest of the world. The new competition structure is what's going to make them successful," Randels said.

Both days drew 25 percent more competitors than last year, including teams from Canada and both coasts, he said.

"Every year, we continue to set world records," Randels said. "Between the field we have signed up, we have a dozen contenders to break speed records. This year we're looking at the front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive overall, two-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive world records. Also, the half-mile standing trap speed world record."

The event will feature some of the biggest names in this industry - Underground Racing, Drag965, English Racing, TopSpeed Motorsports - and a host of local competitors including Jacks Transmissions, he said.

Also new this year are significantly improved VIP areas with "free food, free beer and awesome viewing. You really can't beat it," Randels said.
