Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage is on the move along South Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs.

The Lakewood-based chain, which specializes in organic and natural foods and other health-conscious items, will open a 15,000-square-foot store at 8 a.m. Oct. 26 at 1604 S. Nevada Ave. in the new Broadmoor Shoppes on South Nevada, the company said Thursday. The store will move from the Southern Cross Shopping Center at 1825 S. Nevada.

Natural Grocers officials didn't return a phone call. But the move continues the chain's efforts in recent years to relocate stores from shopping centers to free-standing buildings.

"This is their newest new model, a 15,000-square-foot free-standing (site)," said Walt Harder of Salida-based Harder-Diesslin Development Group, which is developing the Broadmoor Shoppes on South Nevada. "That's what they're building all over America. They don't want to be part of strip centers any longer."

The reason for the move to free-standing buildings probably is based on Natural Grocers' strategy to do what's best for its bottom line, he said.

Harder said his company is pushing for Natural Grocers to open sooner, although it's unsure if the grocery will speed up its timetable.

The South Nevada relocation is the second time Natural Grocers has relocated a local store. Last year, the chain moved a store to a remodeled, former Ethan Allen furniture and design center building at 7298 N. Academy Blvd. from a shopping center farther north on Academy.

The Broadmoor Shoppes on South Nevada - which is expected to include a Chick-fil-A and two fast-casual restaurants - is part of a larger effort to make over portions of South Nevada and nearby South Tejon Street.

In 2015, the City Council declared a roughly 100-acre area along Nevada and Tejon as an urban renewal site.

New stores, restaurants and residences are among upgrades planned for the area, which would replace 1950s-era motels, auto repair centers and pawnshops.

Promotions at the new Natural Grocers on South Nevada will include a grocery giveaway sweepstakes," in which nine shoppers will win gift cards ranging from $10 to $100 a week for six months.
