Julia Herbst and her son were identified by police as the two people killed in a wreck that closed a portion of South Circle Drive for more than five hours Sunday.

The boy's name was not released by police, but spokeswoman Barbara Miller said he was 4 years old.

Brandi Burks, 24, was named as the driver of a Mercury Mariner that struck Herbst's 2003 Toyota Corolla at Ellingwood Drive shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday. Police said she was cited with careless driving resulting in death.

Police said Burks was headed north on Circle Drive toward Fountain Boulevard when she ran off the right side of the road, then continued driving until she T-boned the side of Herbst's sedan.

Major Accident Units worked the wreck until 7:30 p.m., shutting off Circle Drive from Monterey Road to Verde Drive to gather evidence and clear debris.

Police said drugs and alcohol were not believed to be factors in the crash.
