Monday's prep roundup: Highlands Ranch too much for Palmer in girls' hoops

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Highlands Ranch 62, Palmer 40

At Highlands Ranch: The 2012-13 Class 5A state runners-up ran away from Palmer with a 23-point second quarter in both teams' season opener.

Highlands Ranch (1-0) led 13-6 after the first quarter, then outscored the Terrors (0-1) 23-11 in the second to lead 36-17 at the break.

The Terrors were led by Jenn Urbaniak's 21 points. They outscored the Falcons 11-9 in the fourth.

Last season, the Falcons lost a regular-season game to Palmer at Palmer.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Air Academy 64, Coronado 45

At Palmer: Three players scored in double digits as Air Academy (1-0) opened its season with a win over Coronado (0-1) in the Terror Invitational.

Bobby Davis scored a team-high 13 points, while David Louthan and Stephen Heard each added 10 for the Kadets.

Austin Dewing had a team-high six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Heard grabbed five rebounds and a team-high six steals.

Coronado's Chandler Robinson scored a game-high 17 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Senior Kameron Hartle notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars.

 

Rampart 75, Westminster 40

At Westminster: Rampart (1-0) held Westminster (0-1) to single digits in each of the first two quarters, while scoring 38 combined in the half.

The Rams continued to outscore the Wolves in the second half, putting up 18 in the third and 19 in the fourth, while Westminster combined for 25 in the second half.

No individual stats were reported.

 

Elizabeth 90, Widefield 71

At Elizabeth: Elizabeth (1-0) jumped out to a 22-9 first-quarter lead and Widefield (0-1) never recovered in the season opener for both teams.

Elizbeth scored 22 more in the second and 27 more in the third, grabbing a 71-46 lead after three quarters.

 

HOCKEY

Monarch 12, Liberty 1

At Sertich: Alex McAfee scored Liberty's (0-1) lone goal in a blowout loss to Monarch (1-0).

Lancers goalie Jimmy Kellen stopped 51-of-58 shots for a save percentage of .879.

Walker Harris had two goals and two assists for Monarch, which got goals from 11 players.

 

Ralston Valley 10, Cheyenne Mountain 1

At Sertich: Greg Dyba notched a hat trick in the first two periods, as Ralston Valley (1-0) cruised past Cheyenne Mountain (0-1).

Ryan Case scored Cheyenne Mountain's lone goal. The power-play score cut Ralston Valley's lead to 3-1. But Dyba scored twice in a 1:24 span to open the lead up for the Mustangs.

 

Dakota Ridge 4, Doherty 1

At Sertich: Dakota Ridge (1-0) scored three times in the second period, and Doherty (0-1) never recovered.

Tyler Gaard during a 5-minute major power play, but the Spartans would get no closer.

Dakota Ridge outshot the Spartans 27-16.

Doherty gave up a short-handed goal late in the second period.

 

GIRLS' SWIMMING

Palmer 108, Mesa Ridge 75

At Mesa Ridge: Palmer defeated Mesa Ridge in both teams' season opener for girls' swimming, despite Mesa Ridge winning seven of the 12 events.

Carmen Mena won both the 100 butterfly (1 minutes, 5.70 seconds) and 200 individual medley (2:25.71), posting state-qualifying times in both.

Mesa Ridge's Jamie Quirk finished the 50 freestyle in 29.28 seconds.

Palmer did not report stats.

 

FOOTBALL

Both Coronado and Pine Creek will have school assemblies on Tuesday to honor their state football champions.

The Cougars won the 3A state title over Silver Creek on Saturday, while Pine Creek defeated Montrose for the 4A state title.

The titles were firsts for both schools in football.
