DENVER — A Denver District Court judge has declared a mistrial in a serial rape case after the defendant apparently killed himself.

The Denver District Attorney's Office says 48-year-old William Costello was found dead at the bottom of a multi-story parking garage Thursday. Spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said Costello appears to have taken his own life.

Costello's trial in a series of sex assaults dating back to 2008 started this week. He was charged with the rapes after being arrested for assaulting a petition-gatherer in 2012. DNA samples were taken from him under Katie's Law and linked him to the sex assaults.

He failed to show up for court Thursday. A GPS monitor showed him at various locations, but paramedics later found his body.
