JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri senators are looking to spend more money on promoting the state to potential tourists.

The Senate Appropriations Committee agreed Tuesday to boost the Division of Tourism's budget by about two-thirds, from slightly less than $15 million currently to nearly $25 million in the next fiscal year.

Gov. Jay Nixon had recommended the $10 million funding bump. The House had approved a $5 million increase in its version of the budget.

Negotiators from the two chambers will have to work out a final version of the budget by May 9.

The Senate committee also decided to add $5 million to the budget to help cover expenses if Kansas City is chosen to host the 2016 Republican National Convention.
