The Associated Press- Updated: June 16, 2013 at 5:16 pm

Military helicopters dispatched to fight the Black Forest fire have been sent back home.

Lt. Col. Mitch Utterback of the Colorado National Guard said Sunday that helicopters from Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado have returned to their home bases.

The fight against the Black Forest fire is focused mainly on the ground now as crews stamp out hot spots to prevent flare ups inside containment lines.

The National Guard still is helping secure roadblocks at the fire.

Utterback said that helicopters dropped 1,297 buckets of water (equal to 800,000 gallons) since on the fire that started Tuesday north of Colorado Springs.
