Gazette Premium Content Memorial set for Colorado school shooting victim

The Associated Press Published: January 1, 2014

DENVER — A memorial service is being held on New Year's Day for a 17-year-old girl who was fatally shot at her suburban Denver high school.

The service for Claire Davis is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at the National Western Livestock Show complex in Denver. Davis competed in an equestrian event at the National Western in 2013 and planned to compete again in 2014.

She was critically wounded at Arapahoe County High School on Dec. 13 when another student, 18-year-old Karl Pierson, fired at her with a shotgun. She died Dec. 21.

Pierson committed suicide.

Investigators say Davis was a random victim and Pierson's likely target was a speech and debate coach who had disciplined him.

Gov. John Hickenlooper ordered flags to be flown at half-staff Wednesday in her honor.
