Memorial services for recent Colorado College graduate and hockey standout Scott Winkler, who passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, are scheduled for Friday, June 21 in his hometown of Asker, Norway.
According to CC athletic director Ken Ralph, the college will commemorate Winkler’s life in Colorado Springs sometime after the start of the 2013-14 school year to allow more fans, students and players to participate. The team and recent alumni are being asked for their input. More details will follow when available.
Winkler died at his parents’ home less than a month after he graduated with an economics degree on May 20. The cause of death has not been determined.
The Winklers have asked that anyone wishing to send flowers please send them to the house for transportation to the funeral home. The house address is: Winkler Family, Bleikerhaugen 194, Asker, Norway 1387.
The family has not indicated that there are plans for charitable donations. Winkler, 23, was a third-round selection (89th overall) of the Dallas Stars in the 2008 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 202-pounder finished with 63 points (24 goals) in four years as a Tiger.
In lieu of flowers, Winkler’s family is requesting that people consider donating to a charity in his name benefiting a sports high school, Norges Toppidrettsgymnas, he attended in Norway before moving to the United States to pursue hockey.
According to a release from the family, the school educates and trains top athletes from around the country to help them reach their potential.
