BOULDER — Donations to build a memorial dedicated to a trophy elk that was killed by an on-duty Boulder police officer have tapered off.

Just a few weeks after the elk was killed on Jan. 1, 2013, a group had collected about $3,000 in hopes of possibly building a bronze statue in the neighborhood.

Rita Anderson with In Defense of Animals tells The Daily Camera (http://bit.ly/1gA9V70 ) the fund currently holds $3,600 in donations, and the group may not be able to afford a statue to honor the elk, dubbed Big Boy by neighbors. But she hopes some kind of memorial can be built soon.

Officer Sam Carter said he shot the animal because it was injured, but an examination found no signs it was hurt before it was killed.
