Morning commuters experienced delays Monday when a Memorial Hospital helicopter landed at the UCCS campus and a portion of Austin Bluffs Parkway was shut down by campus police.

Interim police chief Brian McPike said the Memorial Star medical helicopter crew was training and touched down on campus at the university's parking lot number 4 at 8:30 a.m.

"We shut down westbound traffic at Meadow Lane for drivers' safety, in case the helicopter's rotors kicked up dust and dirt," McPike said.

Although drivers reported considerable delays and traffic backups as traffic rerouted through Meadow Lane, McPike said the roadway was shut down less than 10 minutes, as the helicopter returned to the Colorado Springs Airport for mechanical checks.
