Update 7:35 p.m. Wednesday
Manitou Avenue will be closed from Beckers Lane to Crystal Hills Boulevard later than anticipated Wednesday night, but will be open for traffic Thursday.
Part of Manitou Avenue will be closed Wednesday and Thursday while crews install a new sanitary sewer line.
Drivers will need to route around the construction between Beckers Lane and Crystal Hills Boulevard from 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on both days, according to the county's spokesman Dave Rose. Flaggers will help drivers reach businesses within the construction zone.
Eastbound drivers will be detoured north on Beckers Lane to eastbound El Paso Boulevard, then to Columbia Road and then back south to Manitou Avenue. Westbound drivers will be detoured south on Crystal Hills Boulevard to westbound Sutherland Road, then to Crystal Park Road and back north to Manitou Avenue.
The construction is part of the $30 million Westside Avenue Action Plan project to improve the 1.5-mile segment of Manitou Avenue and West Colorado Avenue between 31st Street and the U.S. 24 Interchange by turning the route into a three-lane roadway, adding bicycle lanes, and improving sidewalks and storm water drainage.
The project, slated to be completed in December 2018, also will feature a new bridge and underpass at the Columbia Road/Adams crossing; a pedestrian bridge over Fountain Creek; a wall along the north side of West Colorado Avenue/Manitou Avenue; rerouting about 1,000 feet of Fountain Creek to better manage high water; and moving electrical and communication lines underground.
It is being funded through the voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority.
