Ishmal Mitchell, 19, was identified Monday by the El Paso County Coroner's Office as the victim of a homicide that occurred Friday near Helen Hunt Falls. Mitchell died of multiple gunshot wounds, Colorado Springs police said Monday.

Brandon Cockrell, 33, of Colorado Springs has been booked into the El Paso County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder without bond, according to police and jail records. Police said Saturday that they had a suspect in custody but did not release his name until Monday afternoon.

Mitchell was found about 8:40 p.m. Friday near 2210 N. Cheyenne Canyon Road. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.

Police investigated a residence on Afternoon Circle, near South Chelton Road and East Fountain Boulevard in relation to the shooting, but did not provide details about what they were looking for or how the residence might be connected to the incident.

Mitchell's homicide is the 17th in Colorado Springs this year. Last year at this time, 12 homicides were reported and investigated, according to police records.

Anyone with information can call Colorado Springs police at 444-7000, or Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP (7867).
