A single-vehicle crash about noon Friday on northbound Interstate 25 near Greenland claimed the life of a man who was driving a cement mixer from Colorado Springs.

The northbound lanes of I-25 were closed for several hours, with traffic detoured at County Line Road. It reopened at 5 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol tweeted.

Trooper Josh Lewis said at 1:30 p.m. that he expected northbound I-25 to be closed "for at least a couple hours."

Southbound lanes remained open, however traffic was very slow "due to rubbernecking," the state patrol said.

Troopers are asking motorists "to be cautious near crash scenes and to not slow down or stop for pictures or videos while driving."

The driver of the vehicle has not yet been identified, the state patrol said.

The initial investigation shows that the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had "sudden tire failure" on one to two tires and lost control.

"The mixer had eight yards of a cement-water mixture, which shifted and caused the vehicle to roll onto the driver's side, coming to rest in the left lane and median between north and southbound lanes of I-25," the state patrol said.

It's unknown if the driver was wearing a seat belt, the state patrol said.
