A man was found dead on Galley Road just north of The Citadel mall after a shooting was reported around 3 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Colorado Springs police would not confirm if the man died from gunfire, nor would they speculate on any motive.

According to one witness account, the man was walking near the Citadel Apartments at 3616 Galley Road with two females when at least one man approached him from behind and shot him. According to the witness, the girls ran.

The body remained for several hours while police investigated the crime scene, near a Toys "R" Us and a row of auto shops.

After the shooting, curious onlookers from nearby residences and businesses talked among themselves about what they'd heard, and one group peered at the scene from a small alleyway near a dumpster and a pile of tires.

Early in the investigation, police had not identified a suspect and were not actively searching for the shooter in the area, said Lt. Catherine Buckley.

Police activity in the area shut down several residential streets and Galley Road between Academy Boulevard and Chelton Road for several hours. Nearby Twain Elementary and Mitchell High school were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, according to a tweet from Colorado Springs School District 11.

The lockdown only affected students participating in afternoon activities, the district said. Buckley said that it was unknown whether there was any threat to the community and police recommended that nearby residents stay in their homes during the investigation.

If the El Paso County Coroner's Office rules this death a homicide, it will be the fifth in Colorado Springs for the year, and the third in February.
