Man charged with attempted murder at Colorado Springs church

William Thomas, 42, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after an early-morning stabbing at Southgate Church of the Nazarene, 1615 E. Cheyenne Road.

He is in custody at the Criminal Justice Center.

Colorado Springs police responded to a report of a stabbing at the church at 2:11 a.m. Monday.

The victim, 36-year-old Janus Armstead, sustained life-threatening injuries, according to police. He was transported to Memorial Hospital, where he underwent and survived surgery.

The church had been allowing homeless people sleep in the church's basement, police said. No one answered the church's phone Monday.
