Gazette Premium Content Man arrested in Colorado Springs burglary, assault

Colorado Springs say they police arrested a 22-year-old man after he allegedly burglarized an apartment, ran over one of the burglary victims and passed out in his green Buick.

The whole thing started with a at 2:25 a.m. when the burglary victim called police to the 4200 block of North Academy Boulevard. The victim said gaming systems and jewelry had been taken from their apartment.

Officers were told that the burglar, identified as Deon Smith, grabbed the loot and left in a vehicle, police said. When the victim and some friends tried to retrieve the stolen property Smith allegedly drove over one of the friends legs, police said. The injured person was taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible broken leg.

Officers caught up to Smith on Audobon Street, police said in a news release. Police say they found Smith passed out in the Buick, but he woke up and ran from officers and tried to resist capture. Smith was not injured, police said.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of assault, theft and other charges related to his resisting arrest, police said. Smith also had a warrant for his arrest pertaining to a mid-March incident in which he was suspected of felony menacing, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, according to court records.

He was held at the El Paso County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
