Colorado Springs Police arrested a transient man Sunday morning in connection with an alleged unprovoked attack in the heart of downtown that left one man fighting for his life.

Vernon Banis, 33, allegedly used a knife to slash the face of a man near the intersection of Tejon and Bijou Streets just before 8 a.m., according to Lt. Thomas Harris. When officers arrived, they found the victim with a life-threatening laceration.

According to police, Banis spends a great deal of time on the streets of downtown.

Police took Banis into custody and he was charged with first-degree assault. He is being held at the El Paso County Jail on $25,000 bond.

Police said the victim was in stable condition as of Sunday evening.
