Joey Perez, 18, of Colorado Springs, allegedly chased after children with chains at the Centennial Elementary School yard Tuesday, but he told police that he meant to defend himself from an attacker.

Police said they got reports that a man, identified as Perez, was threatening to strangle kids with chains on the playground around 7:18 p.m., at 1860 S. Chelton Rd.

Officers said they had to threaten Perez with a stun gun to get him to surrender, then arrested him on suspicion of felony menacing. As the investigation continued, Perez claimed he had not meant to hurt the children, but was defending himself from a man who had attacked him.

Police caught up with Juan Rodriguez, identified as the alleged attacker, at the school's playground and took him into custody after a short foot chase.

Rodriguez, 53, was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault of an at-risk adult and booked into the El Paso County jail and held on a $5,000 bond, records show. Police did not specify why Perez was considered an at-risk adult.
