Schuermann said he was awarded a $19,000 contract to produce the five-minute video after he was among several local production companies to bid on the contract in early October.
"I had worked with the CVB (Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau) before, and once we were awarded the contract, one of the stipulations was that we had 30 days to produce it," Schuermann said. "Me and my team, we busted some serious butt. It was a big challenge but It was so rewarding."
The video features several well-known community and business leaders offering definitions of what it means to be a champion in the "City for Champions."
The video also shows 3-dimensional renderings of the four projects that are part of the multimillion-dollar tourism and redevelopment proposal, an Olympic museum in southwest downtown, an adjacent 10,000-seat outdoor arena and 3,000-seat indoor arena for Olympic and amateur sporting events, a $27 million sports medicine facility at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and a visitors center at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The proposal, which seeks some $125.1 million over 30 years in sales tax subsidies from the Regional Tourism Act has been the subject of scrutiny recently and undergone some revision.
But those concerns are secondary for Schuermann, who has produced several popular films, such as "Haze," about the American college alcohol culture and the upcoming "Creep," a retro sci-fi thriller biography.
"I'm a visual guy. I'm not a politician," he said. "They showed me the numbers but all I thought was this looks cool and I could make it work."
Doug Price, president and CEO of Colorado Springs CVB, said the video was funded by "proceeds raised to develop and submit the application" for City for Champions.
