GOP Congressman Doug Lamborn and his Democrat challenger Irv Halter are neck and neck in campaign financing for the 5th Congressional District election in November.

Lamborn reported Friday in the fourth quarter raising $56,658, spending $13,624 and having $113,674 cash on hand.

Halter reported raising $55,213, spending $28,640 and having $109,739 cash on hand.

The newcomer to the race, Democrat Leslie Summey, didn't report any contributions in the last months of 2013.

Halter's campaign manager Ethan Susseles said they are satisfied with their contributions in the difficult fourth quarter filled with holidays.

Lamborn said it's too early to be consumed by politics.

"I am making steady progress, but up until now I've been concentrating much of my energy on just doing a good job for the people as a representative," Lamborn said. "As we get into the political season I will gear that up even more."

Lamborn has held the office since 2006. He has handily won re-election every two years against both primary and general election opponents.

Susseles believes now is the right time to challenge Lamborn.

"We've done internal polling that shows that the electorate knows who he is and has an unfavorable opinion of him," Susseles said. "We think that makes him especially vulnerable, particularly because of the government shut down."

Lamborn said his electorate, while unhappy with the shut down and the gridlock, know him.

"I am not a part of Washington," Lamborn said. "I tend to be part of the solution."

Susseles said Halter's military record - he's a retired two-star Air Force general - and his history with the Colorado Springs business leaders will also give him a boost in the election.
