Monument Ice Rinks is giving the youth of the Monument and Colorado Springs area an opportunity to lace up a pair of ice skates and try hockey for the first time.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, children ages 4 to 9 can enjoy free hockey with equipment provided. Children of all skill levels are welcome. Parents can sign up for one of three sessions. The first runs from 9 to 9:45 a.m., the second runs 10-10:45 a.m. and the final session runs from 4:15-5:15 p.m. The rink is located at 16240 Old Denver Road.

Former Boston Bruins defenseman Al Pedersen will be in attendance at all three sessions.

The sessions are part of a national campaign by USA Hockey to reach out to kids and families who may have been thinking about playing the sport after seeing it in the Winter Olympics. According to USA Hockey's website more than 400 hockey rinks will be participating.
