Kate Brady started work Monday as senior bicycle planner for Colorado Springs, which aims to become a designated gold-level Bicycle Friendly City within five years.

Brady, a former Monument planner, earlier was associate planner for bicycle, pedestrian and livability issues for the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments, where she collaborated on bicycle/pedestrian improvements for the Oklahoma City area.

"Kate brings a wealth of bicycle planning experience needed to help build well-connected on-street bicycle facilities that will encourage more people to bicycle for transportation and recreation," said Public Works Director Travis Easton, former Monument mayor. "We are excited to bring Kate on board to further enhance our vibrant bicycle friendly community."

Brady is to develop and implement the city's Bicycle Master Plan to pursue the targeted designation through the League of American Bicyclists.

Colorado Springs, also known as Olympic City USA, has an active cycling community, with more than 100 miles of on-street bicycle routes, nearly 20 miles of urban bike trails and more than 60 miles of unpaved mountain bike trails, the city reports.

A bicycle excise tax enacted by voters in 1988 has raised more than $2 million, through a $4 tax per bicycle purchase, to pay for such improvements.

Local cyclists voiced concerns last summer about new bike lanes at Union Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway, calling them a dangerous, confusing addition that makes cyclists vulnerable to being hit on a road so steep that it's tough for the high-speed vehicles to stop quickly.

More markings were planned to make the bike lanes stand out, but cyclists are responsible to yield to motorists at the off-ramp, city Transportation Manager Kathleen Krager said at the time.

Brady now will help to coordinate plans for such routes.
