A sophomore at James Irwin Charter High School on Friday won the Boys & Girls Club of the Pikes Peak Region's 2017 Youth of the Year Award.

Dave Robinson II has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for nine years. He has participated in several club activities and has volunteered at Camp Bow Wow and the Haunted Club.

The Boys & Girls Club is a place where "possibilities are endless" and people can "dream without any fear of judgment," Robinson said in a released statement. Robinson was one of four local nominees. The nominating criteria included leadership, community service, academic excellence and healthy lifestyles. In addition, all nominees are expected to serve as "a role model for other young people in the Club and as a representative to the community," according to the news release.

Robinson will now go on to participate at the state level. The state winner goes on to a regional and possibly the national Youth of the Year competition. The national winner will meet the president at the White House, and receive a new car and more than $100,000 in scholarships.
