GEORGETOWN — The Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels on Interstate 70 are getting an upgraded fire suppression system.

KMGH-TV reports (http://bit.ly/UY7CV6 ) that work begins this fall on a $20 million project to upgrade fire suppression plans.

On average, 30,000 vehicles per day pass through the tunnel. The Colorado Department of Transportation says workers typically handle two to three fires per year.

The upgrades include a water-only deluge system capable of suppressing a large fire in the first two minutes. The tunnel will also get a fire-suppression system capable of providing water for 60 minutes.

CDOT says most of the construction work will be "invisible" to the traveling public, because it will occur in the ventilation shafts above the tunnels. The work should be complete in 2015.
