CRATER LAKE NATONAL PARK, Ore. (AP) — Interior Secretary Sally Jewell visited Crater Lake National Park on Saturday to mark the beginning of National Park Week.

Jewell joined students from the Network Charter School in Eugene, Ore., for a snowshoe hike along the Hemlock Trail.

Students conducted scientific experiments to learn about the temperature, density and water equivalency of snow.

During her visit, Jewell discussed the importance of the National Park System to local economies. The National Park Service recently released a report that national parks generated $26.75 billion in economic activity in 2012 while supporting 243,000 jobs.

Those figures include $45 million in economic activity in communities near Crater Lake that supported 551 jobs.
