INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indiana-born astronaut who became the first person to complete seven space shuttle missions will be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame this spring.

Jerry Ross spent more than three decades as a NASA astronaut before he retired from the space agency in January 2012. Ross grew up in Crown Point and is a Purdue University graduate.

He'll be inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame during a May 3 ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center.

Fellow space shuttle astronaut Shannon Lucid will also be inducted. She is the only American woman to serve aboard Russia's Mir space station. Lucid also retired from NASA in 2012.

Retired NASA astronaut Dan Brandenstein says Ross and Lucid "are extraordinary astronauts who made history" during their frequent shuttle missions.
