Ron Gabaldon, left, hoses down the rink to build up layers of ice while Brian Rawlins keeps the hose clear in Acacia Park on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017. The team from Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation waited for the water to freeze before repeating the process multiple times a night over the weekend leading up to the ice rink opening.

Eat your heart out, Katarina Witt.

Things are about to get lively downtown with the opening of Colorado Springs' only outdoor ice skating rink. Skate in the Park will open at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Acacia Park, 115 E. Platte Ave. Folks can hit the ice daily through Jan. 15.

A grand opening and free public skate will happen Friday, with remarks by city leaders and a skating demonstration by 2010 Olympian and U.S. Figure Skating Champion Mirai Nagasu.

Themed activities will take place throughout the holiday season, including a tree lighting ceremony and a visit from Santa Claus on Saturday, a skating session with members of the Colorado College hockey team on Dec. 3 and a SkateFest with U.S. Figure Skating on Dec. 16.

Admission is $10 per person, which includes skates. Kids 3 and younger are free with a paying adult. Folks with a valid military ID receive $1 discount.

Go online to find hours of admission at downtowncs.com/skate.
