How the Dow Jones industrial average did Thursday

Better corporate earnings helped nudge the stock market higher on Thursday in one of the quietest sessions this year. Health-care companies led the major indexes to slight gains, while Berkshire Hathaway crossed another milestone, trading above $200,000 a share for the first time.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 61.78 points, or 0.4 percent, to 16,713.58.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 8.46 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 1,955.18.

The Nasdaq composite rose 18.88 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,453.00.

For the week:

The Dow is up 159.65 points, or 1 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 23.59 points, or 1.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 82.10 points, or 1.9 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 136.92 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 106.82 points, or 5.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 276.41 points, or 6.6 percent.
