The Dow Jones industrial average lost 14.25 points, or 0.1 percent, to 24,448.69.

The Nasdaq composite slipped 17.52 points, or 0.2 percent, to 7,128.60.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks sank 2 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,562.12.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is down 3.32 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Dow is down 270.53 points, or 1.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 225.21 points, or 3.3 percent.

The Russell 2000 is up 26.61 points, or 1.7 percent.
