A suspect in a Fremont County homicide was arrested Wednesday after shots were fired at pursuing police officers.
Tyler Delaney and Kayla Mattice, both 20 and of Cañon City, were captured after their vehicle was forced to stop on Mackenzie Avenue, Cañon City police said.
Delaney allegedly fired at officers, and officers returned fire, but no one was injured, the Fremont County Sheriff's Office said. Delaney is a suspect in the killing of Thomas Gwardyak, 18, whose body was found near Brush Hollow Reservoir on Saturday.
Mattice was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to first degree murder, the Sheriff's Office said.
Five officers from various agencies, including one Florence officer, were taken to the hospital for injuries suffered during the pursuit and while forcing Delaney to stop, the Sheriff's Office said.
The chase started at 10:48 a.m. when Delaney was spotted in a vehicle driving east on U.S. 50 near Steinmeier Avenue in Cañon City. Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it sped away, police said. Delaney also is suspected in other felonies. Police did not elaborate.
