A Fuller Picture

They're often referred to as "the homeless," a term that paints a monolithic picture of a population whose only shared attribute is the lack of a permanent home.

Each person has a unique story about becoming homeless, and Pikes Peak United Way has worked to give them voice in a project called "Shining a Light on Homelessness." Working through partner agencies, United Way had clients fill out forms to tell their stories.

Here is a sampling:

Linda M., 43

Length of homelessness: 3 years

Reason for homelessness: "One of my older brothers took all my money."

Length of homelessness: 3 years

Reason for homelessness: Domestic violence, jobless

Brad P., 37

Length of homelessness: 19 months

Reason for homelessness: Job loss, injury, lack of resources

Damion S., 20

Length of homelessness: 6 months

Reason for homelessness: Moved in with a friend's family; was asked to leave. Is working full time, but can't cover expenses, including credit card debt.

Length of homelessness: On and off for a year

Reason for homelessness: Fell on hard times; have jobs on and off, but still struggling. Three children, ages 6 to 11, have stayed with relatives while the couple sleeps in a van with a small propane heater

Bama, age unavailable

Length of homelessness: 4 years

Reason for homelessness: Came from Alabama to Colorado Springs for a job, but was injured a month into it and is stranded here. He's been in housing for several months, and still has health problems.
